How to Mentally Prepare for Test Day

How to Mentally Prepare for Test Day Its the day before your big test. Youve vigorously read through all the material, flipped over every flashcard, and memorized every fact. If you prepared adequately, youve been doing this for weeks (or months, depending on the test) and not just in the last 24 hours. Procrastination is not a method of choice for a task this huge that task being studying for an important exam. Assuming you did not leave it all to the last minute, the final day before you actually face the exam can be a little strange. Youll have those first-day-of-school butterflies and be unsure of how exactly you should go about your day. Should you cram some more? Should you completely distract yourself with something fun? Or should you just nervously wait and listen to classical music all day because it supposedly makes you smarter? Well, your goal is to ace this test, and half the battle is comprehending the material which youve already done so dont let that go to waste! Add a clear mindset and youll be ready f or test day. But how do you go about that? There are a few buzzwords or typical phrases people around you will say: Relax, dont make yourself crazy, no need to get stressed out, its not as big a deal as youre making it out to be. Although this is all substantial advice necessary to calm your nerves, the truth is that its difficult to relax, you probably are making yourself crazy, stress is inevitable, and it usually is a big deal. Being in denial of all of this wont help anything, and it certainly wont push you in the direction of a calm demeanor. Accepting these nerves is the first step in taming them, as well as the first step in clearing your mind for test day. Its okay to freak out a little and let your energy out better that than keeping it pent up to rage around inside your head, right? Acknowledging your fears and concerns will get you closer to overcoming them. Once youve gotten your emotions out of the way, incorporate a good balance of both reviewing test material and relaxing into your day. No need to choose between one or the other; simply combine them in a healthy way. Instead of going through every bit of studying all over again, just choose the areas that you most frequently had issues with and do whatever it takes to ingrain them into your mind. Bring the material around with you wherever you go throughout the day so you can take a look sporadically, rather than forcing yourself to take another crash course for six straight hours. As for where youll be going and what youll be doing, that is up to you and whatever activity puts you in a relaxed and content mood. This isnt the day to go riding rollercoasters or hitting up parties, but tanning at the pool or hanging out at the coffee shop. Do something that allows you to be comfortable, but still continue to soak everything up. Anything too stimulating will take your mind off the test material too much, yet being in an environment that doesnt comfort you at all will ensure your nerves get the best of you, so finding the perfect activity that balances these factors out is crucial.Lastly, get a great nights sleep and review significant material right before you go to bed. Typically, the things you think about just before falling asleep tend to resonate with you more than anything else when you wake up the next day. Especially if your test is early in the morning, this is a wonderful thing to do because it allows you to begin the day with the knowledge firmly placed in your brain, not leading you to panic about retaining it. Whether you are about to take an Algebra test, the SAT, or a college Philosophy final, these tips are sure to help you mold your mindset in the way you need. Embrace the feelings you are having and make of them what you want them to be.

Best Tutors Team Together to Help Others

Best Tutors Team Together to Help Others Last week,  Tutorfair’s  best tutors in London gathered together to participate in a workshop for year eleven pupils deciding on their future steps post-GCSE. As part of  Tutorfair’s  charity promise to provide tutoring to those who can’t afford it, we were helping out our friends at  The Access Project.    They are a fantastic charity aiming to open up access to top universities for students at state school. Fourteen keen tutor volunteers braved London’s ghastly weather and the tube strike to arrive at the Globe Academy ready to advise students on their future plans. Amongst this group of best tutors, lay a treasure trove of different skills and talents, ranging from professional actresses to university lecturers and from to businessmen to Russell Group university students and graduates. They were ready to share their knowledge and experiences at Globe Academy and felt privileged to be invited to this fantastic school. Based in one of the most deprived catchment areas in London, the tutors were inspired by the motivational teachers and impressive facilities the school had to offer, just as Obama and David Cameron were at their visit in 2011. The afternoon programme saw ninety pupils engaged in four different sessions which worked on a carousel. These were: Professionalism Led by one of  Tutorfair’s  best tutors,  Madeleine K,  (UCLA double major and Cambridge), this workshop emphasised the importance of professionalism in college and the workplace. Helping Madeleine was  Tutorfair’s  Andrew Ground who has recruited graduates from a range of universities. Routes and Pathways This session looked at the different paths that pupils could take to reach their desired career. It emphasised the value of higher education but highlighted the different routes to get there which tutors advised on.  With Laurence Olivier award winning actress,  Amanda H,  offering guidance on degree alternatives and graduates speaking about ways to get into university, the students were given a variety of different options to think about. Apprenticeships As well as outlining some of the apprenticeship options available, the lovely Flick from  Rate My Apprenticeship  provided more generalised advice on filling in a CV and performing at interviews. Flick’s workshop was very popular - surely not because of the chocolates she handed out? Advice from current students This session allowed year eleven pupils to chat to current students at college and university and ask any questions about A-Level and degree study.  One of our volunteer tutors,  Pablo D, a lecturer at King’s College London who also assesses UCAS applications, was therefore able to share his expertise from the teaching side of university and university admissions. Thanks to the tutors and teachers involved, the pupils were given the opportunity to start thinking about their future and the best ways to achieve their goals. The tutors loved giving their individual guidance but were certainly in need of a rest after this intense, tiring but extremely rewarding afternoon.

English Conversation Class The Ethics of Eating

English Conversation Class The Ethics of Eating This weeks English conversation class is about the ethics of eating. There are a lot of questions these days about right and wrong when it comes to how we feed ourselves. Some feel that factory farming is unhealthy and inhumane, while others think it is the only way to provide food to the billions of people in the world. Some people feel that organic food is the only thing to eat, both for health and environmental reasons, while others think it is a waste of money.Do you think about eating ethically? What does eating ethically mean to you? Is being vegetarian or even vegan a more humane, environmentally friendly way to eat? Do you buy organic foods? Is large scale industrial farming necessary, or is it an unsustainable practice that will eventually leave us all hungry? Is it possible to produce food in a human, environmentally friendly way, and still feed everyone?Well talk about these questions and much more for our next group English conversation class. All students who have take an group English conversation class will be sent an email with a link to the class on Wednesday morning. If you would like to join this live, audio/visual class, taught by a native English speaker, click here.Below youll find two videos to help you prepare for the class, a short one about modern pig farming and a longer one about sustainable farming practices in Spain. GCSE English and maths - more important than ever!

GCSE English and maths - more important than ever! It's not so much about how many GCSEs you obtain but what GCSEs you obtain. This may seem to be a surprising statement to make but recent research has found that there is a strong link between cities that have a high youth unemployment rate with the lack of GCSE English and Maths. Between 2007 and 2010 nearly 50% of pupils living in cities left education without GCSE grades A* to C in these subjects. In Hastings and Grimsby where youth unemployment stood at 8.4% and 8.8% respectively between 2007 and 2010, the percentage reaching the official government benchmark of five A* -C GCSEs, including English and maths was 35% and 45%. However, in Cambridge, where youth unemployment stood at 1.3% for the same period, young people obtaining five good GCSEs including maths and English reached 54%. The above findings appear to reflect that over the last few years, schools have been encouraging pupils to study for qualifications that are seen as easier to achieve to boost their position in league tables. Pupils living in cities that have less buoyant economies are not being equipped with the skills required in the changing labour market. The consequences could leave young people with less employment opportunities in cities where skills in English and maths are in high demand. The government is taking steps to rebalance these issues to ensure schools are equipping young people with the basic numeracy and literacy skills they will need to get a job. The Office for National Statistics in October showed the UK jobless total for 16 -to 25 year-olds, hit a record high of 991,000 between June and August 2011. If you want to boost your grades in English and Maths, consider one to one tuition, we have tutors that can help with a variety of learning styles.

Why You Shouldnt Wait To Book A Private Irvine Tutor

Why You Shouldn’t Wait To Book A Private Irvine Tutor Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Your First Report Card to Book Your Private Irvine Tutor Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Your First Report Card to Book Your Private Irvine Tutor Summer break is in its final weeks, which means students should start thinking about school. The summer months are a great time to relax, have fun with friends, and make some extra money, but they’re also a time students get a little rusty. After the stress of finals, it’s not surprising students will want to take a break from learning, but it’s risky to wait until the school year to see if you’re prepared. Too many students wait until they get less than satisfactory first report cards before seeking help. At that point, you’ve already fallen behind and will have to work extra hard. Avoid this scenario by working with a private tutor before your first report card. Below are a few reasons why you should book a private Irvine tutor early in the school year. Tutoring Boosts Confidence Every student has classes they enjoy more than others. For the most part, they like classes they succeed in because it makes them feel confident as a student. When a student struggles in a particular course, they lose confidence and start to fall further behind. Tutoring is an excellent remedy for this scenario. Once a student begins improving as a result of private tutoring sessions, they’ll start to enjoy the class rather than dread it. School Can Get Overwhelming Fast Back to school is an exciting time for students. They get to see all of their friends and find out who is in their classes. The first few days might be fun as students get to know their teachers and go over the course syllabus, but once classwork ramps up it all changes. After school activities begin, homework gets assigned, 8 hours of sleep is rare, and exams are suddenly right around the corner. It’s easy for students to get overwhelmed, primarily by the first big wave of school work. Thankfully, a back-to-school tutor can help you stay organized and on top of things. They have a lot of experience and have found academic success despite having a busy schedule (READ: Why You Need Tutoring This Summer). It’s Harder to Catch Up The Farther Into the School Year As we mentioned in the introduction, once you fall behind schoolwork will only get harder and harder. Since everyone in the classroom learns at different levels, and teachers have to stay on schedule, not every student will be able to keep up with the pace. Putting extra hours at home (our private Irvine tutors work around your schedule) will help you catch up and get ahead. When it comes to booking a private Orange County tutor, don’t wait until it’s too late. Members of the TutorNerds team and our private tutors write every blog post. Three-Time Spelling Bee Champion Always Welcomes a Challenge

Three-Time Spelling Bee Champion Always Welcomes a Challenge Three-Time Spelling Bee Champion Always Welcomes a Challenge Shaylen, 12-years-old, Math Level N “Proboscis” and “tokamak.” Two words that most don’t know the definition of, let alone how to spell without seeing them first. However, 12-year-old Shaylen is not like most people. Those words are just two of many that have won him first place at multiple spelling bees. Holding the title of spelling bee champion is far from this 7th -grader’s only accomplishment. An avid pianist, he performs at recitals and at various nursing homes. Shaylen is also a brown belt in Taekwondo, plays the cello in a local orchestra, and competes in his school’s Math Olympiad. Despite all of his extra-curricular commitments, Shaylen is far ahead of his class academically, often already knowing material upon introduction by his teacher. That’s because somehow, between it all, he is studying advanced high school math, years beyond his grade level, through the Kumon Math Program. “Kumon has been instrumental in helping me focus better and effectively manage all of my activities,” said Shaylen. “When it comes to mastering pieces on the piano or cello, I learned them bit-by-bit like the Kumon Method promotes, helps me learn and understand it to my full potential.” Shaylen’s parents enrolled him in the Kumon Math Program at five years old, where he started out counting numbers. In just seven short years, he has advanced to mastering infinite geometric theories, quadratic inequalities, and discontinuous functions. Being so far ahead of his class has enabled Shaylen to focus on his passions outside of the classroom, especially spelling competitions and attending religion class, along with being able to assist his peers in their understanding of grade level material they may be struggling with. “I stay motivated to continue on with Kumon, even if the work feels challenging,” said Shaylen. “My favorite thing about the program is the fact I am only given examples when I need it. If there was an explanation for every problem, where is the chance to be challenged?” Unsurprisingly, Shaylen was one of 56 students selected from around North America to attend Kumon’s 3rd Annual Student Conference. The event took place in Chicago, Illinois, and enabled extraordinary students like Shaylen to connect and challenge each other through group activities and presentations. We had the chance to catch up with Shaylen to learn more about his journey with Kumon, and what it all means to him. How has Kumon  helped  you academically? Because of Kumon, I find schoolwork and homework easier to do. In math, I already know the materialwhen the teacher introduces the new concept. When I notice someone struggling in class, I try to help them. Being ahead in math allows me to focus on other subjects like ELA and social studies. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has really helped me focus better to manage all my activities, along with improving my sense of responsibility and my time management. This plays a big part in managing my schoolwork, being able to practice my instruments, and participating in other activities almost daily. What is the most beneficial thing you’ve learned in Kumon thus far? The most beneficial thing I’ve learned in Kumon is to have perseverance and motivation to keep going. What do you want to be when you grow up? I don’t know yet, but I do love science! I’m very interested in biology, engineering, physics, chemistry, and astronomy. What achievements are you most proud of? I’m proudest of my achievements in the spelling bees I’ve participated in. For the past three years, I have won the grade-level bee, the school spelling bee, the district-level bee, and advanced to the Capital Region Spelling Bee for my area in New York State where the winner goes to the Scripps National Spelling Bee! This past school year I was most proud because I placed 11th out of 117 spellers! What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? My advice to new Kumon Students would be that you’re going to find some parts fun and easy, and some parts very difficult, but I can promise you that it’s going to help you in so many different aspects of your life. How did you feel when you found out you were selected to attend the Student Conference? When I opened my acceptance letter for the Student Conference, I had so many different feelings. I was ecstatic and very proud. I was so excited, and I couldn’t wait to go! Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My biggest inspiration is my parents.   I like their lifestyle of “Work hard, play hard.” I noticed that they work very hard day to day, but then take very big family vacations and enjoy themselves. I would like to be like them, and I know they want me to always challenge myself and be the best that I can be! Discover even more student success stories.
